Spinal stenosis is the narrowing of the canal that houses the spinal cord or spinal nerve roots. This narrowing can result in pressure or irritation of the spinal cord or nerve roots. Spinal stenosis most often occurs as a result of the aging process but can also be caused by trauma or arthritis.

Spinal stenosis can occur in any part of the spine but is most common in the cervical (neck) and lumbar (lower back) parts of the spine. Lumbar spinal stenosis can cause low back pain or cramps in the legs. Cervical spinal stenosis requires immediate medical attention as it may compress the spinal cord and cause severe neurological effects.

Symptoms

Spinal stenosis will likely cause pain in your neck or lower back, depending on the location of the narrowing of the spinal canal. You may experience other symptoms too, including:

  • Pain in the lumbar (lower back) or cervical (neck) spine
  • Pain that radiates into the extremities that worsens with standing or walking
  • Weakness in the arms, hands or legs
  • Sciatica
  • Leg cramps
  • Stiffness
  • Bladder or bowel dysfunction

Your symptoms may worsen over time, and in the case of cervical spinal stenosis, may require immediate medical attention. If you’re experiencing the symptoms of spinal stenosis, schedule an appointment with a back and neck specialist to get an accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment plan.
