Hydrocephalus, also known as “water on the brain,” is a condition defined by the accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the ventricles of the brain.

Hydrocephalus causes increased pressure on brain tissue inside the skull. This occurs as a result of overproduction or improper drainage of cerebrospinal fluid.

This potentially life-threatening condition is most common in infants but can also be seen in adults. The overaccumulation of CSF can damage brain tissue and lead to long term impairment. It is often most associated with the swelling or enlargement of the cranium. Hydrocephalus can be treated with surgery to restore and maintain normal CSF levels in the brain.
