Oligodendroglioma is a rare form of tumor that originates in oligodendrocytes – the cells in the brain that protect nerve cells.

Oligodendrogliomas may occur at any age, though they’re most often found in adults, and may be grade II (slow growing) or anaplastic grade III (fast growing and malignant). In rare cases, these tumors may spread through the central nervous system in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

Oligodendrogliomas usually require surgical removal. When paired with medication, chemotherapy, and other treatments, this can be effective at prolonging the life and easing the symptoms of patients with oligodendrogliomas.
