Brain metastases are growths that spread to the brain from cancer in another part of the body. Lung, breast, colon, kidney and melanoma cancers are most likely to cause brain metastasis.

Brain metastases are the most common form of brain tumor, most often occurring in the cerebellum. They differ from primary tumors, which originate in the brain, because they originate elsewhere in the body.

Approximately half of patients with brain metastases have multiple tumors. As these tumors grow, they create pressure on the surrounding brain tissue, which can change their function and create a wide range of symptoms.
