Colloid cysts are mucous-like masses, typically appearing at the center of the brain, that may obstruct the flow of fluid in the brain.

The center of the brain is where the lateral ventricles meet – two of the brain’s natural fluid chambers. These ventricles drain into a third ventricle that’s critical for the health and proper functioning of the brain. Colloid cysts can block the flow of fluid to the third ventricle, a condition called obstructive hydrocephalus, which requires immediate medical attention.

Colloid cysts can be detected through a CT or MRI scan. Most often they are discovered when a scan is completed to investigate another issue or related symptom.
